The Psychgeist Community

Psychgeist Media is committed to — and very excited about — building a community of scholars (and allies) interested in helping to bring psychological research to the public in an engaging and responsible way. We hope to serve as a platform to empower and catalyze a broad range of opportunities, and we strive to create the space for a vibrant and inclusive community. We hope this community will be a source of support and collaboration, and that it will generate opportunities to do things collectively that might be far more challenging to do individually. We are committed to an evolving set of activities that make our community interactive rather than a one-way conversation, or a series of individual relationships.

There are some tangible benefits to membership, which are laid out below, but membership is primarily about supporting the Psychgeist community and helping to advance and shape its objectives. As a member, you’re not only supporting the sustainability of something we hope you value, you’re also becoming a stakeholder in the community, with a voice in the direction it takes. We aim to make membership affordable ($150/year), but we have scholarship options available as necessary. We are always happy to work with prospective members to help them to expense membership and, for those without access to grants or other expense accounts, the cost of membership is significantly discounted ($25/year).

If you are interested in the possibility of group membership – for an entire lab group, or even a department – please send us an email at psychgeist@psychgeistmedia.org to discuss possibilities. We are considering making this option more generally available in the future — stay tuned!

So what does membership actually include?

We will be offering an evolving set of membership activities, but you can expect regular office hours, an ongoing series of webinars and workshops related to sharing research with the public, and a newsletter (see below). Members will also be prioritized in receiving feedback on their pitch proposals. In the future, we look forward to holding events aimed at fostering community and to facilitating collaboration among our members, for example in helping to organize writing and interest groups.

  • Office hours: We hold regular office hours, during which you can drop in via Zoom to ask questions, run pitches by us, or just chat. We offer open office hours, which operate on a first-come first-serve basis and can be attended by multiple people simultaneously, as well as short individual time slots for one-on-one meetings.

  • Webinars & workshops: We will be providing regular webinars and workshops on a range of topics related to sharing research with the public, hosted by our team as well as by a variety of guest speakers. Webinars will be recorded and recordings will be made available to members.

  • Newsletter: You’ll be subscribed to our (currently) monthly newsletter, “In the Psychgeist.” At the moment, we don’t have plans to monetize the newsletter, so you could be getting it without being a member, but when we launch an internal newsletter (aimed only at members, and not the public) you’ll have exclusive access.
